Open to high school students who have completed either their sophomore or junior year (graduates are not eligible).
ESSI offers high school students an opportunity to learn about engineering, as well as physics, chemistry, biology and math. Various lectures and labs are offered by KSU faculty members in an effort to illustrate some of the problems and challenges that face us in the next several decades. The program is also designed to aid the student in determining his/her interests both in college and beyond. In addition, those attending will have opportunities for leadership and learning about campus life.
The quality of students has been high. In the past, participants must have taken math and science courses, have a high school GPA of 3.5 or above, and have scored well on ACT, PSAT or Iowa Basic tests. A number of our current National Merit, Presidential, Putnam, Foundation, University, Seaton, and Dean of Engineering Scholarship recipients have attended the Institute.
ESSI will be held in Manhattan on the Kansas State University Campus. The total cost of the Institute is $295, which covers residence hall, meals and supplies. All students must live in the residence hall and take advantage of the "outside-the-classroom" interaction among the students. Students who drive to the Institute must purchase a parking permit for an additional $9.00 for the week. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. Please contact our office for more information (785) 532-5455.
This year, ESSI will be offered for one hour of college credit (DEN 160, Engineering Concepts). Tuition and fees for one hour credit will be approximately $204 for in-state and $529 for out-of-state students. Additional information about the credit will be mailed if the student is accepted to participate in ESSI.
Registration will be Monday, May 26 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. Following registration there will be a picnic for both students and their parents. This event will help students get acquainted and be an opportunity for parents to receive an overview of the week ahead.
All students will be housed in University residence halls. There will be residence hall staff on duty at all times. Students will receive three meals per day in a University Dining Center. Parents and family members have the opportunity to attend the final banquet, which will be held Friday evening. Guests attending the picnic or the banquet will be charged a nominal fee. Checkout from the residence hall will take place after the Friday banquet.
Medical treatment will be available at local hospitals; however, each student must be covered by his/her family health insurance. The Institute will not cover any medical treatment. Upon acceptance to the Institute, you will receive a medical release form that must be notarized and returned before registration.
A $100 non-refundable deposit, unofficial high school transcript, and standardized test scores (if available) must accompany the application. For those students who attend, the $100 will be applied to the total cost. Deposits will be returned only to those students who are not accepted into the program. Students will be notified of their acceptance by April 18, 2008. Due to the popularity of this Institute, students are encouraged to apply early.
